In a world increasingly driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), it’s tempting to believe that human intelligence (HI) is slowly becoming obsolete. But what if the opposite were true? What if the future of technology-enhanced services actually required more human input—not less?
This is something I experienced first-hand in the unlikeliest of places: Diego Suarez, Madagascar—and earlier in Essaouira, Morocco.
A Brilliantly Human Transport System
In both cities, local public transportation is built on a decentralized network of independent drivers—taxis in Morocco, tuk-tuks in Madagascar. There is no centralized app, no Uber-like algorithm. Instead, each driver operates independently, using their own judgment and preferences to pick up passengers, plan routes, and set priorities. Yet, somehow, this swarm-like system functions with incredible efficiency.
Prices are unbelievably low—about €1 in Morocco, and just 20 cents (1000 Ariary) in Madagascar for trips across the entire city. More impressively, every driver charges the same fixed rate. No tourist markups, no bargaining, no tricks. Just a shared understanding and mutual respect between drivers and passengers. As a tourist, that’s incredibly refreshing.
Always Available, Always Efficient
Need a ride? Just step into the street. A tuk-tuk will stop within seconds. Riders hop in, share destinations, and the driver adapts the route—on the fly. It’s ridesharing in its purest form, but without an app, without AI. Instead, it relies on HI: local knowledge, communication, and social intuition.
Drivers act as dispatchers, planners, and negotiators—all while navigating traffic and holding conversations. It’s a level of multi-tasking and real-time problem solving that current AI can’t match.
When HI Beats AI
As someone who's also a happy investor in Uber, Bolt, and Grab, I admire what technology has done for transport. But what I saw in Diego Suarez was 10 times more efficient than Uber. These drivers don’t sit idle. Their vehicles are almost always in motion, often carrying multiple passengers heading in similar directions.
The route planning? Done by humans.
The optimization? Real-time, face-to-face, contextual.
This is Human Intelligence in action—outperforming AI, not in brute calculation, but in social nuance, emotional intelligence, and live negotiation.
Applying This to GlobalAssist
At GlobalAssist, we embrace AI. We use chatbots to handle repetitive queries, speed up responses, and ensure that no lead is missed—even during off-hours. But we’ve learned that AI has limits:
Customers with urgent or emotional needs prefer talking to a human.
Bots often misinterpret context or insist on asking irrelevant questions.
In many cases, local knowledge and real-time decision-making are simply better done by people.
That’s why we’ve found success in combining AI with HI. Our bots handle initial inquiries, collect structured data, and free up our agents’ time. But whenever possible, we hand over to a real person—especially when human flexibility, empathy, or creative problem-solving is needed.
A New Global Opportunity
This approach has shown us something powerful: HI isn’t dead—it’s going global.
Why shouldn’t a smart, bilingual assistant in Madagascar help a family in France find a flat, book a doctor, or deal with insurance forms? AI can support the process, but humans still build the trust, read the nuances, and get the job done.
With AI tools, Africans can now serve global clients more efficiently than ever before. Labor costs are 10–100 times lower in many regions, but quality can be just as high—especially when powered by great tools and smart workflows.
We believe that this future is bright—not just for travel services in developing countries, but for global service models that bring the same speed, care, and efficiency to customers everywhere.
So the next time you think about AI replacing jobs, consider this:
Maybe it’s not about replacing humans.
Maybe it’s about enabling them.
And in that sense, Human Intelligence is not only still relevant—it might be the most underutilized asset in the digital world today.
